Reeling Film Festival

Reeling: The Chicago LGBTQ+ International Film Festival, founded in 1982, is the second longest-running film festival of its kind, and prides itself on showcasing the best LGBTQ+ films and videos each year. From award-winning international feature films to social documentaries to experimental shorts, Reeling has always presented a range of genres that demonstrate the rich diversity of work being produced. Not only has Reeling become one of the most important cultural events for Chicagoans, it also attracts LGBTQ+ people from throughout the Midwest who consider the festival to be the highlight of their cinematic year.

J Sath has been working with Chicago Filmmakers, producers of Reeling Film Festival, for the past three years. Creating a new face for the festival each year experimenting with type, color, and expression.

2020-2018

When Brenda Webb, executive director of Chicago Filmmakers, asked me to design for the 2018 Reeling Film Festival, we had a discussion about what the festival so special. She talked about how it has provided a unique opportunity for the celebration of LGTBQ+ identities to communities that too often are ignored or misrepresented in mainstream film and television. The works shown also help to enlighten the general public about the realities of their neighbors’ lives, as many of the cultural and social-justice issues of the day are revealed through film.

Although, the festival has been successful, Brenda talked to me about how they wanted the design to steer towards a younger demographic. From there I wanted to create something that was more palatable towards a internet-aged audience.

For the 2018, 2019 and 2020 festival, J Sath created all digital and print ads, eblasts, posters, signage, merch and etc. using the chosen designs.

Chicago Filmmakers, producers of Reeling Film Festival, is a not-for-profit media arts organization that fosters the creation, appreciation, and understanding of film and video as media for artistic and personal expression, as well as media of important social and community impact. Chicago Filmmakers' twofold mission is to serve independent film and digital video artists by supporting the creation and dissemination of new media arts works and to serve Chicago audiences by screening artistically innovative, socially relevant, and diverse films and videos.

Before working on Reeling Film Festival in 2018, J Sath was working on posters, digital and print ads and signage for Chicago Filmmakers.
